Gardaí in Navan have confirmed that the disappearance of Mark Duffy, who was last seen in the town in October 2022, has now been reclassified as a murder investigation.
The 43-year-old was last seen on 3rd October 2022 and has not been seen or heard from since.
An Garda Síochána said today, Wednesday, 30th September 2026, that the decision to reclassify the case was based on the entirety of the information available to the investigation team at Navan Garda Station.
A dedicated investigation team, led by a Senior Investigating Officer, has continued to examine the circumstances of Mark’s disappearance.
A family liaison officer remains in place and Gardaí said Mark’s family were updated on the development this morning.
Last confirmed movements
In the weeks before his disappearance, Mark had been living homeless in a tent in Navan town.
On 3rd October 2022, he was at the Post Office at Johnstown Shopping Centre at approximately 10.50am.
Later that afternoon, at around 2.45pm, he was captured on CCTV on Commons Road, walking into McDermotts Villas housing estate.
That remains the last confirmed sighting of Mark.
He was reported missing on 13th October 2022 by a family member who became concerned after not hearing from him.
The subsequent Garda investigation established that there had been no further sightings of Mark, his phone had not been used and he had not left the country.
Gardaí carried out searches in Navan and along the River Boyne, but no evidence of his whereabouts was found.
Gardaí renew public appeal
Mark is described in the latest Garda appeal as being approximately 5 foot 8 inches in height, of broad build, with brown hair and blue eyes.
He walked with a noticeable limp at the time.
When last seen, he was wearing dark clothing with a cream hoodie underneath, with the hood outside his jacket.
Gardaí are now renewing their appeal to anyone who may have information about Mark’s disappearance and murder.
They are particularly asking anyone who saw or spoke to Mark on 3rd October 2022, or in the days leading up to his disappearance, to come forward.
Anyone who was in the Commons Road or McDermotts Villas area of Navan at around 2.45pm on 3rd October 2022 is also being asked to consider whether they saw Mark or know where he went afterwards.
Gardaí have stressed that no piece of information should be considered too insignificant.
