People across Meath are being encouraged to visit their local library on Saturday, 26th September as National Public Libraries Open Day returns for 2026.
Meath County Council Library Service will mark the day with a programme of free family-friendly events across the county, while also highlighting the range of services available through free library membership.
National Public Libraries Open Day is a nationwide celebration of Ireland’s public library network, which includes 330 libraries.
The aim is to encourage more people to visit their local branch and discover the programmes, resources and services available throughout the year.
Magic, science and STEAM activities
Among the events planned in Meath are magic shows in Bettystown, Navan and Trim Libraries, while Dr Brain’s Fun-believable Science Show will take place in Ashbourne Library.
Every library in the county will also host a STEAM Saturday session, giving children and adults an opportunity to explore, create, play and learn together.
Library staff will be available throughout the day to introduce visitors to local clubs, activities and services and explain what is available to members throughout the year.
Much more than books
While libraries remain an important resource for readers of all ages, the Open Day will also highlight the wider range of services now available.
Library members can access eBooks, audiobooks, online newspapers and magazines, learning resources, family programmes, cultural events and community activities.
Libraries also provide welcoming spaces where people can read, learn, meet others and take part in activities in their own communities.
Maedhbh Rogan-McGann, County Librarian with Meath County Council Library Service, encouraged people to visit their nearest branch.
“Our libraries are welcoming spaces at the heart of their communities, offering something for everyone. We invite people of all ages to visit their local branch on National Public Libraries Open Day and discover all that Meath Libraries have to offer.”
Celebrating the role of public libraries
Dr Stuart Hamilton, Head of Libraries Development at the Local Government Management Agency, said the day was also an opportunity to recognise the role libraries play across Ireland.
“Public libraries are one of more than 1,100 services delivered by local authorities every day and continue to play a vital role in communities across Ireland.
National Public Libraries Open Day takes place on Saturday, 26th September, with events taking place across Meath Libraries. In Louth, libraries are also preparing for a busy week of activity, with the Lit Lú Literary Festival running from 23rd to 29th September and bringing free author talks and literary events to Drogheda, Dundalk, Ardee, Dunleer and Carlingford.
