Culture Night in Drogheda will continue well into the evening this Friday with Night Moves Culture Night Late, a programme of free music, art, film and late-night cultural events taking place across the town.
Produced by Droichead Arts Centre, the programme begins from 7.30pm and runs late, with events taking place in venues including McHugh’s, Odd Mollies, Coffee Box, Barlow House, Graft Bru Hub and Droichead Arts Centre.
All events are free to attend and no booking is required.
Night Moves builds on Droichead Arts Centre’s ongoing late-night cultural programme and brings together local promoters, curators and artists for a series of events designed to make Culture Night continue after the main daytime and early evening programme.
Light installations across the town
Artist Vivienne Byrne will lead the latest development of Night Pools, a series of light installations using video projection and light sculpture.
Two large outdoor projections, Urban Love and Wilde Love, will be shown on the former Choice building and former Methodist Church.
The trail will also include lantern installations in shopfronts, before culminating in a large light sculpture at the Methodist Church.
The project also involves artists Breda Marron and Yvonne Dowd Gardiner, with support from Droichead’s Outreach and Community Curator Kieran Gallagher.
Live music at Coffee Box
Night Moves Café begins at Coffee Box on George’s Street from 9pm.
Curated by SJ McArdle, the night will feature Green and Shine with Mary Green and Noel Shine, Dagogo Hart, Peadar Connolly and Julian Knows.
Film and experimental music at Droichead
At Droichead Arts Centre on Stockwell Street, Mismantler begins at 9pm.
The film by Andrew Keogh and Steve Stapleton features music by Nurse with Wound and is presented by 33-45.
The work is described by organisers as a dark, stream-of-consciousness film experience.
Hardcore punk at McHugh’s
At McHugh’s on the Cord Road, Spiral will present a four-band hardcore punk show from 9pm.
Headliners Pleasure, from Leeds, will be joined by No Magic, Breakeven and Instruction.
There will also be stalls selling merchandise, zines, tapes and records from a number of independent distros and labels.
New Drogheda artists at Odd Mollies
Blas Do Theanga will take over Odd Mollies on Peter Street from 9pm.
The event will feature original music from three emerging Drogheda artists, Sophie Moon, KIDD and Téga, who will perform material from projects released this year.
Techno at Graft Bru Hub
At Graft Bru Hub on Abbey Lane, Drogheda Groove Movement will present Sunil Sharpe from 8pm.
Sharpe is one of Ireland’s best-known techno DJs and is also a co-founder of Give Us The Night, the campaign group focused on supporting and developing Ireland’s nighttime economy.
Support sets will come from Emore and Erik.
Community workshop at Barlow House
At Barlow House on Narrow West Street, Community Ties begins from 7.30pm.
Cailleach Books and Adroit Press will host a participatory workshop teaching basic knots and lashings used for building shelters and temporary structures.
Cailleach Books will then remain open for people to drop in, browse independent publications and take part in informal discussion.
Tea and snacks will be available throughout the evening.
Trad sessions across Drogheda
Boyne Trad Fest will also be part of the Night Moves programme with Night Trad Trails across Barney Mac’s, Clarkes and McHugh’s.
The sessions will feature Gary Curley on button accordion, Rachael Dooley on harp, Enda Dooley on banjo, Oisín Bradley on concertina and other musicians.
Galleries staying open late
Droichead Arts Centre Gallery on Stockwell Street will remain open from 9pm until late, while The Kiosk Arts Project will stay open from 7.30pm until late.
Night Moves Culture Night Late is produced by Droichead Arts Centre and funded by the Arts Council, Drogheda’s Night-Time Economy Adviser and the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport.
The programme is being delivered in partnership with a range of promoters, curators and artists including Spiral, Drogheda Groove Movement, Blas Do Theanga, Cailleach Books, Boyne Trad Fest, 33-45, SJ McArdle and Vivienne Byrne.
All events are free and no advance booking is required.
