Bus shelters in Donacarney are among a number of new public transport improvements planned for the area, with two new shelters and two additional bus stops set to be provided.
Fianna Fáil Councillor for South Drogheda-East Meath Stephen McKee said two new bus shelters will be put in place on the Garra Road, close to Castle Glen, over the coming weeks.
The shelters are being delivered under Meath County Council’s Schedule of Works Programme 2026.
Two new bus stops are also planned for Donacarney School Road, between the old Community Centre and the school.
Cllr McKee said he had been lobbying for the additional infrastructure on behalf of residents and welcomed confirmation that the locations had been included in the programme.
“I have lobbied hard for these bus shelters and bus stops for the area on behalf of local residents and will continue working on the inclusion of more locations as part of the rollout programme so that in time we have bus shelters at every bus stop in East Meath,” he said.
New bus stops planned for School Road
The two new stops on Donacarney School Road will serve local bus service providers, including Matthews Coaches and Bus Éireann, according to Cllr McKee.
The addition of the stops comes as the population of Donacarney and the wider East Meath area continues to grow.
Cllr McKee said public transport infrastructure needs to keep pace with that growth.
“With the population growth in the area, residents need to be able to access high-quality public transport services,” he said.
“We need to improve all transport and public services including basic infrastructure such as bus shelters and bus stops.”
The announcement covers two separate parts of Donacarney, with the new shelters planned for Garra Road and the additional stopping points to be located on School Road.
The bus shelters in Donacarney will add to a number of shelters installed across East Meath in recent times.
Further bus infrastructure sought for East Meath
Cllr McKee said he had supported and lobbied for a number of the bus shelters already installed across the area and intends to continue seeking additional locations.
“There have been a number of bus shelters installed recently across East Meath which I have lobbied for and supported so it is good news to see bus stops in Donacarney now included,” he said.
“The reality is however that we need more and I will continue working on the inclusion of more locations.”
The planned works will see two bus shelters in Donacarney provided on Garra Road (close to Castle Glen), along with the two new bus stops on School Road.
The Garra Road shelters are expected to be installed over the coming weeks as part of the Council’s 2026 works programme.
Once completed, the improvements will provide additional public transport infrastructure in an area that has experienced significant population growth, while the School Road stops will provide designated stopping points for services operating locally.
Cllr McKee said his longer-term aim is to see additional shelters provided at bus stops throughout East Meath as the rollout continues.
