What started as a simple gardening project for four local children blossomed into an extraordinary fundraising success, with the Callaghan family raising more than €10,000 for Oscar’s Kids through a community sunflower sale.

Jean and Rory Callaghan, along with their children Henry (7), Lucy (6), George (5) and Archie (3), originally hoped to raise between €500 and €1,000. Thanks to the generosity of friends, neighbours and the wider community, they ended up raising more than ten times that amount for the charity.

The inspiration for the fundraiser came after close friends of the family experienced the heartbreaking loss of their little boy, Odhrán. Through their friends’ experience, the Callaghans learned about the work of Oscar’s Kids and the support the charity provides to children with life limiting illnesses and their families.

Although Oscar’s Kids has not directly supported their own family, seeing the impact it had on their friends left a lasting impression.

The fundraising effort began in April when the children planted sunflower seeds in the garden. As the flowers began to grow, the family came up with the idea of creating a small sunflower shop for friends and neighbours.

The children embraced the project from the beginning, helping to create flyers and deliver them throughout the local area. What began as a modest community fundraiser quickly gathered momentum, with friends, schoolmates and supporters from further afield all getting involved.

On the day of the sale, around 250 people visited the family’s garden to support the fundraiser. Many others donated even if they could not attend.

The result was a staggering €10,000 raised for Oscar’s Kids.

One of the most memorable aspects of the project was watching the children take ownership of the fundraiser and understand the positive impact they could have on the lives of others.

The Callaghan family are incredibly grateful to everyone who supported the fundraiser, from friends and neighbours to members of the wider community and those who donated from further afield. The kindness and generosity shown were overwhelming and made the day especially memorable for the children.

For those who may not be familiar with Oscar’s Kids, the charity focuses on creating moments of joy and normality for children and families going through incredibly difficult times. Alongside practical assistance, it provides emotional support and helps create lasting memories that families will treasure forever.

The family said that kind of impact is difficult to measure but means everything to those who experience it.

They hope the funds raised through their sunflower sale will help Oscar’s Kids continue creating special moments for families facing challenging circumstances and show what can be achieved when a community comes together behind a simple idea.
