History lovers are being invited to explore some of Drogheda’s lesser known stories this week during a special History and Heritage Walk n Talk led by community historian Brendan Matthews.
The guided walk will take place on Wednesday evening, May 27, beginning at St Mary’s Church on James Street at 7.30pm.
During the walk, Brendan will speak about several historic sites that once stood in the area around the Bullring and James Street, including the Chapel of St Nicholas, the town jail, the Castle of Comfort and the Hospital of St James.
Participants will then continue along the Dublin Road, taking in the Georgian houses and the former Union Workhouse before descending the steps near the train station towards Marsh Road, where a later St James’s Hospital once stood.
The walk will also pass Ship Street before finishing at the site of the former Carmelite Friary near the South Quay and d hotel area at approximately 8.30pm.
The event is free to attend, with donations welcome to support further historical research and future living history presentations.

Brendan Matthews was joined by British Ambassador to Ireland Kara Owen for a special History and Heritage Walk n Talk through the streets and lanes of old Drogheda on Thursday, May 21.
The photograph shows Brendan Matthews and Ambassador Owen at Drogheda Civic Offices on Fair Street alongside the town’s ceremonial Sword and Mace, which were presented to the Corporation and Town of Drogheda by King William III following the Battle of the Boyne in 1690.
