Concerns raised over damage to Socks Byrne sculpture in Drogheda

Concerns have been raised over damage to the well known Socks Byrne sculpture at Scotch Hall in Drogheda.

Sinn Féin councillor Debbie McCole said she contacted Louth County Council after becoming aware of what appears to be significant damage to the statue.

“I was made aware of the damage to the statue and following a visit, I noticed what looks like cracks and damage to the feet of the statue. My fear would be that it break completely and topple over,” she said.

Cllr McCole said she contacted the council about the issue and that her party colleague Joanna Byrne TD also raised concerns.

“The Council subsequently erected railing around the statue to prevent contact with it.”

However, she said some members of the public have since raised concerns about the temporary barriers themselves.

“Members of the public have now queried as to whether the railings themselves are now a safety concern. They are only temporary and easily movable and unfortunately can draw attention to the statue and its vulnerability.”

Cllr McCole said she had already contacted Louth County Council before the recent Boyne 10k to ask if there were plans to repair or restore the sculpture and has now sought an update on what action will be taken.

“We all know that Socks’ sculpture is much loved locally and I have been heartened by the number of calls that I have received about it. I will continue to engage with Louth County Council to find a resolution so the sculpture can continue to be enjoyed by everyone who holds it in such high regard.”
