Architects appointed for €7m West Gate House redevelopment in Drogheda

Louth County Council has appointed Shaffrey Architects to lead the next phase of the West Gate House project in Drogheda.

The appointment marks a further step in plans to restore and redevelop West Gate House along with the former Drogheda Youth Development building. Shaffrey Architects will oversee the detailed design and lead the wider team delivering the project.

The development has secured €7 million in funding through the THRIVE programme and aims to transform the historic building into a cultural and community space for the town.

Plans include a multi use hub featuring a performance space and a rooftop garden.

The project is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the ERDF Southern, Eastern, and Midland Regional Programme 2021-2027.

Cllr Seán Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, said:

“West Gate House is one of Drogheda’s most recognisable historic buildings, especially for those entering the town. Today marks a major step forward in securing its future. This project will protect the building and bring new life and activity into this important gateway to the town centre.”

Cllr Michelle Hall, Mayor of Drogheda, added:

“The regeneration of West Gate House is something the people of Drogheda have hoped for over many years. Its restoration will create a welcoming and vibrant space for community groups, visitors and residents alike and I am delighted to see this transformative project now moving ahead.”

David Conway, Chief Executive of Louth County Council, said:

“The redevelopment of West Gate House reflects our commitment to protecting our built heritage while supporting the sustainable regeneration of our towns. Shaffrey Architects have an excellent track record in heritage‑led innovation, and their achievements in restoring complex historic sites make them ideally placed to lead this next phase. We look forward to working closely with them to deliver a project that will benefit the people of Drogheda for generations to come.”
