Laytown & Bettystown Golf Club Renames Senior Scratch Cup in Honour of Ray Moore

Laytown & Bettystown Links Golf Club has announced that its prestigious Senior Scratch Cup will be renamed The Ray Moore Senior Scratch Cup in honour of the late Ray Moore and his remarkable contribution to the club and to amateur golf.

Ray Moore passed away in August 2024 and leaves behind a legacy closely connected to the history of Laytown & Bettystown Links Golf Club. He joined the club as a 14 year old in 1968 and remained a committed member throughout his life. Ray also served as Club Captain in 2005.

An outstanding amateur golfer, Ray won many prestigious titles during his playing career. However, the Laytown & Bettystown Senior Scratch Cup always held a special place for him.

Ray’s influence extended far beyond his own achievements on the course. He played a key role in developing and strengthening the club’s Senior Scratch Cup. Recognising its potential, he helped secure a new date for the event two weeks before the West of Ireland Championship, helping to attract many of the country’s leading amateur players.

For many years, Ray also sponsored the competition and personally contacted top amateur golfers to encourage them to take part. On some occasions, he even covered players’ entry fees himself to ensure the strongest possible field. His dedication and generosity helped establish the event as one of the most respected competitions in Irish amateur golf.

Speaking about the decision to rename the event, Club Captain Ollie O’Sullivan said:
Ray was a truly special member of our club. His passion for Laytown & Bettystown and for amateur golf was unmatched. The Senior Scratch Cup meant so much to him, and his work helped turn it into one of the finest amateur competitions in the country. Renaming the event in Ray’s honour is a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much to our club.

Ray’s family also welcomed the tribute:
Ray loved Laytown & Bettystown Golf Club, and he loved the Senior Scratch Cup. It brought him great pride to see the competition grow and attract such strong fields each year. As a family, we are deeply honoured that the club has chosen to remember him in this way.

The Ray Moore Senior Scratch Cup, sponsored by UPMC Sports Surgery Clinic, will take place on Sunday March 22 at Laytown & Bettystown Links Golf Club. The competition will have a prize fund of €2,500 with the winner receiving €830 along with the trophy.

Booking is now open and the deadline for reservations is 6pm on Wednesday March 18, 2026.
