Louth County Council’s Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations got underway with a lively Céilí of traditional singing, dancing and music at the Civic Offices, Fair Street on Monday, 9 March.
Students from Scoil Aonghusa, Sunday’s Gate, and St Brigid’s and St Patrick’s NS from Bóthar Brugha, showcased their talents with traditional Irish songs, instrumental solos, Irish dancing and even an Irish brush dance for those in attendance at the Exhibition Room.
Seachtain na Gaeilge, which runs each year from 1 March to St Patrick’s Day, is an international Irish-language festival, celebrating the Irish language and culture worldwide.
Mayor of Drogheda, Cllr Michelle Hall, said: “It was wonderful to welcome the students to the Civic Offices today. Their enthusiasm and talent brought great energy to the room, and it was a fantastic way to kick off our Seachtain na Gaeilge and St Patrick’s Day celebrations.
I would like to extend my thanks to the principals, Edel Ní Bhroin of Scoil Aonghusa and David O’Callaghan of St Brigid’s and St Patrick’s, for supporting the event and allowing the students to show their undoubted talent.
Our Seachtain na Gaeilge celebrations grow stronger each year, and our ambition is to see every school in Drogheda take part in performances at the Civic Offices in the future.

Events like today highlight the confidence, creativity, and pride young people have in their Irish, and it reinforces our commitment to supporting Irish cultural education across the county.
