Louth County Council Library Service is inviting people across the county to get lost in a good book as it joins libraries nationwide in celebrating Ireland Reads, a national campaign encouraging people to read throughout February, culminating in Ireland Reads Day on Saturday, February 28.
The initiative forms part of the Healthy Ireland at Your Library programme, which highlights the benefits of reading for wellbeing and enjoyment. This year’s theme is Get Lost in a Good Book, and the Louth County Council Library Service is encouraging everyone in County Louth to take part.
Launching the campaign, Cllr Seán Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, said:
Growing up, I spent countless hours in my local library, first as a child getting lost in adventure stories, and later as a student hunting for a quiet corner to study. Those moments stayed with me, and they remind me just how important our libraries are. Here in Louth, we’re lucky to have five fantastic public libraries that are open, welcoming, and completely free to join. They’re places where you can slow down, escape into a good book, spark your imagination, or simply take a breather from the stresses of everyday life. This Ireland Reads Day, I’d encourage everyone to drop into their local library and experience that joy for themselves. There’s a whole world waiting on the shelves.
A range of events for all ages has been organised to celebrate reading, books and literature.
Ireland Reads Day events include An audience with local author Nicola Pierce at Dundalk Library at 11am and Drogheda Library at 3pm. Nicola will speak about her life as an author and discuss her latest book Great Irish Wives, which recently won History Book of the Year at the An Post Irish Book Awards.
Vroom Town storytime with author Emer Conlon for children aged three to eight years will take place in Dunleer Library at 10am, Drogheda Library at 12pm and Ardee Library at 3pm. Carlingford Library will also host a storytime event for children at 11am.
Whether you are a lifelong reader or rediscovering the joy of books, there is something for everyone through Louth County Council Library Service.
Amanda Branigan, County Librarian, said:
Reading enriches our minds, reduces stress, and connects us to ideas and stories that shape who we are. It opens doors to knowledge, imagination, and supports wellbeing in today’s busy world. Ireland Reads is all about encouraging people to take time for themselves to enjoy the benefits of reading and we encourage people to visit us and participate. Libraries are welcoming spaces for everyone, offering thousands of books and eBooks tailored to all interests. We encourage people across County Louth to take time during February to visit their local library, get reading recommendations and join for free. Get lost in a good book.
