More than 10,000 members of Irish Girl Guides will take part in celebrations on the 22 February to mark a major milestone, 100 years of World Thinking Day, which is celebrated by Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in over 150 countries worldwide.
The 2026 celebrations take place under the theme Our Friendship, highlighting the friendships that sit at the heart of the Guiding movement. Through these friendships, girls develop a strong sense of belonging, build confidence, and gain a deeper understanding of their place in a wider world. Across Ireland, members are exploring what friendship means in their own lives and communities, while also connecting with Guides and Scouts globally through activities that promote international sisterhood, understanding and positive change.
In Drogheda, more than 300 members of Drogheda Girl Guides will come together to celebrate the centenary of World Thinking Day. Units from Drogheda, Duleek, Mosney, Tullyallen, Monasterboice and Clogherhead will take part, with members represented from across all sections of the organisation, including:
Ladybirds ages 5 to 7
Brownies ages 7 to 10
Guides ages 10 to 14
Senior Branch ages 14 to 30
Adult Leaders and Trefoil Guild members
The local celebration highlights the long and positive impact Girl Guiding has had across the wider Drogheda area for generations. It also reflects the continued involvement of young people in leadership, community service and personal development, values that remain central to the Guiding movement 100 years on.
World Thinking Day provides an opportunity for members to reflect on their shared values, celebrate global connections, and recognise the importance of friendship in shaping confident, engaged and compassionate young people, both locally and around the world.
Irish Girl Guides Chief Commissioner Aisling Claffey Healion highlighted the significance of the occasion and the values at the heart of the movement.
World Thinking Day reminds our members that being a Guide means being part of a global sisterhood. For 100 years, friendship has connected girls across borders and generations. Irish Girl Guides are proud to be part of this worldwide movement, where girls support one another, learn together, and grow into confident young women. Through this global connection, they also develop a strong sense of care for their communities and the wider world.
