The Wilkinstown Schools Pistol Cup has been retained by Ruby Collins, a student at Our Lads College Greenhills in Drogheda. The 14-year-old from Waterunder delivered an impressive performance to take first place in a strong field of 26 competitors representing 19 schools.

The competition is based on Olympic target shooting, with the cup awarded to the winner of the 10 metre air pistol event. Each competitor was required to fire 30 time-limited shots at a stationary target from a distance of 10 metres. While simply hitting the target presents its own challenge, the ultimate goal is accuracy, with the bullseye measuring just 11.5mm in diameter, roughly the size of a shirt button. Competitors must hold the pistol single-handed at arm’s length, demanding intense concentration, physical control and mental focus throughout the event.

Ruby produced a standout score of 273 out of a possible 300 to secure the title, continuing a strong run of form since first taking up the sport. Her calm and consistency under pressure set her apart in a highly competitive contest.

Coached by Anthony Cooney, Ruby is now preparing for a major milestone in her sporting career. She has been selected by Target Shooting Ireland to represent Ireland as a junior athlete at the Intershoot international competition, which will take place in The Hague in the Netherlands from 4th to 8th February. The selection marks a significant achievement and reflects her rapid progress and growing reputation within the sport.
