Drogheda United secure US defender Leo Burney

Drogheda United have confirmed the signing of defender Leo Burney, adding further strength to the squad ahead of the new season.

The 24 year old arrives in Drogheda following a spell in the United States, where he signed with Seattle Sounders for the 2025 season. Burney featured 19 times across all competitions for Tacoma Defiance, the MLS Next Pro affiliate of Seattle Sounders. A product of the Sounders FC Academy, he became the club’s 24th Homegrown Player signing.

Before turning professional, Burney enjoyed a successful college career at the University of Pennsylvania, where he spent four years and established himself as one of the standout defenders in the Ivy League. He was named Ivy League Defensive Player of the Year on two occasions, in 2022 and again in 2024.

Across his collegiate career, Burney made 69 appearances, scoring 11 goals and helping his side secure three consecutive Ivy League Regular Season titles. Alongside his college commitments, he also gained valuable experience in the USL League Two with Ballard FC, making 43 appearances and playing a key role in their league title win in 2023.

Drogheda United manager Kevin Doherty said the club had been tracking Burney for some time and was impressed by what he brings to the team. He described Burney as a strong and versatile centre back who is comfortable on the ball and capable of fitting into different systems. Doherty also highlighted Burney’s leadership qualities, experience and attitude, noting that character and a desire to improve are just as important as ability when making new signings.

Speaking after completing the move, Burney said he is delighted to be joining Drogheda United and becoming part of a club with a strong reputation. He said discussions with the coaching staff and ownership showed clear ambition and quality within the club, and he is eager to contribute on the pitch. Burney also praised the atmosphere at Sullivan and Lambe Park, adding that he is looking forward to playing in front of Drogheda supporters.
