Alison Comyn welcomes €400 million investment in Ireland’s tourism sector

Fianna Fáil Senator for Louth and East Meath Alison Comyn has welcomed the announcement of a €400 million investment in Ireland’s tourism sector, describing it as a major boost for the industry and a significant opportunity for tourism growth in the region.

The funding package will support the development of new visitor attractions, upgrades to tourism infrastructure and the promotion of Ireland as a destination to international markets.

Senator Comyn said Ireland’s global appeal continues to draw millions of visitors each year, with tourism playing a vital role in communities across the country, including in Louth and Meath. She said the sector supports local jobs and businesses while showcasing the country’s landscape, culture and heritage.

The investment forms part of the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment’s Sectoral Capital Plan for 2026 to 2030. It builds on last year’s review of the National Development Plan, which identified tourism as a key driver of economic growth and regional development.

Tourism currently attracts more than six million overseas visitors annually, supports around 235,000 jobs and generates approximately €6 billion in revenue. The new funding includes €77 million dedicated to overseas marketing, aimed at reaching new markets and encouraging more visitors to travel to Ireland.

Senator Comyn said the increased marketing budget will play an important role in attracting international visitors and expressed hope that many will explore the wider region during their stay.

The announcement also includes a €200 million Tourism Product Development Programme, which will support projects focused on improving visitor attractions and delivering sustainable, high quality tourism experiences. In addition, Shared Island tourism initiatives will enhance cross border cooperation, while new digitalisation supports will help tourism businesses remain competitive and innovative.

Senator Comyn said the investment recognises the importance of tourism to Ireland’s identity and communities, adding that it will help the sector grow in a way that delivers long term benefits for local areas and future generations.
