The festive spirit was in full swing this week as Louth County Council’s Community Team prepared and packed over 300 Christmas bags and cards for older and vulnerable residents across the county. Each bag was filled with seasonal treats, sweets, and small gifts to bring joy during the holiday season.
The initiative was supported by members of Louth Older People’s Council and community partners, including Meals on Wheels, An Garda Síochána, and The Alzheimer Society of Ireland – The Birches Dundalk. These groups helped distribute the bags to those who needed them most.
Louth Libraries also played a key role, delivering Christmas bags to recipients of the Library Housebound Service and participants at The Memory Café in both Dundalk and Drogheda Libraries.
Sinead McVerry, Age Friendly Louth Programme Manager, said:
“The Age Friendly Christmas Bags provide more than just a card or gift. They offer an opportunity for someone to call and check in, which can make a real difference at this time of year. We know Christmas can be a challenging period for some older people, and through this small gesture, we hope to help them feel connected and remembered.”
The initiative highlights the importance of community support and collaboration in ensuring that older residents feel valued and cared for during the holiday season.
