The Drogheda Tidy Towns committee is to plant over 4,000 new trees this Winter in six different locations around Drogheda.
First up is the green in Brookville Park this Friday morning when children from nearby St Ita’s School will help with the planting.
Five other locations for the new trees have also been agreed and they are Rosevale, Knockbrack Downs,Riverbank, the new Tredagh Lodge Day Care Centre and an area beside Marymount School in Ballsgrove.
The Ballsgrove planting will take place on December 16 next and once again local school children will be involved and the rest will be planted between now and mid February.
There will be 600 to 700 trees planted in each location and they will include twenty five different native species.
Most of the cost of the trees is being paid for by Amazon as part of the national Stepping Stone Forests project which is planning to have fifteen thousand trees planted around the country before the middle of the Spring.
Drogheda Tidy Towns chairperson Gerry Leydon said the idea is to create a new area of woodland in each of the selected locations throughout Drogheda to increase biodiversity, support wildlife, improve air and soil and enhance green spaces for communities.
” These sites help birds, insects and native species navigate urban areas with limited greenery.”
The Brookville planting will be from 9.30 to midday and local people are invited to attend with the spades and gloves! Sturdy footwear is also essential.
