The Mayor of Drogheda has expressed deep disappointment and concern following the announcement that Dunnes Stores is to close its long-standing branch on West Street.
In a statement issued on behalf of the elected members of Drogheda Borough District, the Mayor said the decision appeared to have been made without any prior consultation or engagement with Louth County Council, the Drogheda Business Improvement District (BID), or the Drogheda & District Chamber of Commerce.
“Given the central role this store has played in the heart of our town for decades, the lack of dialogue with local stakeholders is particularly regrettable,” the Mayor said.
The closure, they added, represents a serious blow both to the dedicated staff—many of whom have served the community for years—and to the loyal customers who rely on the store as part of their daily lives. The announcement is also expected to impact footfall and the broader retail vitality of West Street and Drogheda’s town centre.
The Mayor urged Dunnes Stores to act responsibly and swiftly in determining the future of the premises, emphasising that it is vital the building is not allowed to remain vacant. “We urge the company to engage constructively with the council, the BID, and the Chamber to explore all possible options for a positive and productive future use of the property.”
Despite the setback, the Mayor reaffirmed the town’s resilience and determination: “Drogheda is a town of resilience and enterprise, and while this development is deeply disappointing, we remain committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure the continued revitalisation and prosperity of our town centre.”
