“A Breach of International Law”: Louth Sinn Féin TDs Demand Action After Chris Andrews’ Detention

Louth Sinn Féin TDs Joanna Byrne and Ruairí Ó Murchú have condemned the reported detention of Senator Chris Andrews, who was among hundreds of humanitarian activists on board the Global Sumud Flotilla bound for Gaza.

The flotilla, which included representatives from 46 countries, was carrying humanitarian aid such as food and medical supplies to civilians in Gaza when Israeli forces reportedly intercepted and boarded the vessels, detaining those on board.

Video footage shared from the scene showed peaceful passengers surrounded by armed Israeli naval forces. Sinn Féin representatives have described the incident as a breach of international law.

Deputy Joanna Byrne said she “commended Senator Andrews for his bravery” and described the actions of Israeli forces as “a total disregard for human rights.”

“This was a purely humanitarian and non-violent mission carrying food and aid to Gaza,” she said. “The Irish government must stand strong to ensure our Irish citizens are returned safely and that Israel face sanctions for their actions.”

Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú also criticised what he described as government inaction, calling for stronger measures to support Palestinians.

“The time for talking is over — the Palestinians need action,” he said. “My friend Senator Chris Andrews was on that flotilla bringing medicine and baby food to people that are starving to death. Governments must do more to end the suffering in Gaza.”

The Global Sumud Flotilla organisers have said their mission aimed to deliver aid and raise international awareness about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

As of Tuesday evening, no further official update has been issued on the condition or whereabouts of those detained.
