Mary Lou McDonald: “Game On” as Sinn Féin Backs Catherine Connolly for President

Sinn Féin has announced it will back Independent TD Catherine Connolly in the upcoming Presidential election, following a meeting of the party’s Ard Chomhairle today.

Party leader Mary Lou McDonald said the decision was made after extensive consultation with party members and opposition groups nationwide. “This is a big decision to support a candidate from outside our membership,” she said. “It allows us to take on Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, give people a clear choice, and give people hope. It’s game on to elect Catherine Connolly as Uachtarán na hÉireann.”

McDonald described Connolly as a unifying figure who could champion fairness, neutrality, disability rights, and Irish unity. She said the election comes at an important moment, with growing momentum for reunification.

The Sinn Féin leader also paid tribute to President Michael D. Higgins, thanking him and Sabina Higgins for their service.

“President Higgins has served our country with distinction and integrity, promoting our creativity, culture, and democratic values,” she said. “This election is a chance to continue that tradition with a new voice for the people.”
