Gardaí are trying to locate the owners of 60 bicycles including some expensive hybrid and mountain bikes all of which were either seized or recovered since the first lockdown.
They are currently in the Garda station in Dundalk and an appeal on social media reunited some with their rightful owners.
While the bikes are in the care of the Dundalk Gardai, it is suspected that some of them could belong to people from from Drogheda.
Community Garda Darragh Prior explained that due to Covid restrictions they are asking people to email them photos of their bikes or the owner with the bike and Gardai will see if they can find the matching bike among those in the station.
He some of the bicycles were recovered while others were seized by Gardai as they were suspected of being stolen.
The response from the public so far has resulted in several of the bikes being returned to their owners in just over twenty-four hours and Gardai are hoping to add to that number.
The enquiries about the bikes have come from Drogheda, Meath and one as far away as Limerick.
In the public appeal, which has been shared on social media, the community policing unit said, ‘Have you had a bicycle taken or misplaced in the past 12 months? We have a number of bicycles here at Dundalk Garda Station and we want to return them to their rightful owners.
“If you think you own one of these bicycles please contact the Community Policing Unit at Dundalk.Community@garda.ie Covid-19 restrictions apply. Proof of ownership will be required.”
