“A very positive first step in changing Drogheda’s urban environment” says cycling group
The National Transport Authority (NTA) has published plans for proposed cycle lanes in and around Drogheda which will be installed by Louth County Council.
The plans include seven separate stretches of cycle way – from the R168 Collon Road to the Rosehall roundabout; Twenties Lane to the Termonfeckin Road; The North Road; from the Bridge of Peace to the Railway Station including a section on the Marsh Road, The Dublin Road; Rathmullen Road to Marley’s Lane and at the Ballymakenny Road. The Drogheda Cycling Group which has been campaigning for more cycle lanes for the town, has welcomed the announcement saying it is “a very positive first step in changing Drogheda’s urban environment”.
Chairperson Noel Hogan said: “this development is a very positive first step in changing Drogheda’s urban environment to promote cycling as a positive alternative to car use.
“We believe that cycling should be seen not just as a leisure activity but as a means of transport in and around Drogheda for people of all ages. Access for all is at the core of what we are trying to achieve.”
He added that the Drogheda Cycling Group will be making a submission to Louth County Council this week to ensure that these developments are “fine-tuned” to avoid any minor problems.
“We encourage members of the public to do the same” he said.
Also expressing his pleasure at the announcement was Councillor James Byrne who has been promoting the case for more cycle lanes for some time.
“I very much welcome this important first step in the process of providing safe cycling routes in the town” he said.
“This is a clear sign of the Government’s commitment to providing cycling infrastructure throughout Ireland.”
“It would be fantastic to see some of our school’s succeed in securing funding under the Safe Routes to School Programme to complement these plans” he added.
