Over €150,000 to be spent on outdoor dining and seating in Drogheda

€157,000 is to be spent in Drogheda on infrastructure to facilitate outdoor dining and to make the town centre more pedestrian and cycle friendly.

Last year, following research and prompting from the LoveDrogheda BIDS group, Louth County Council applied for funding from the National Transport Authority (NTA) and recieved €585,000 in funding for the various parklets, parasols, picnic tables, and planters that have sprung up around the town.

Building on the success of the scheme, the NTA has launched a new round of funding for this year and Louth County Council has been awarded €545,000.

Of this money €157,000 is to be spent on projects to encourage outdoor dining in Drogheda and to provide protection to pedestrians. The projects proposed for Drogheda are:

Narrow West Street

A pedestrian Friendly initiative costing €80,000 is proposed for Narrow West Street which will include the installation of a row of planters to create a fenced off area between pedestrians and cars thereby creating a safer walking space.

It will also bring greenery to the otherwise hard streetscape.  It is intended to fill planters with trees/shrubs/flowering plants; and erect five steel picnic tables and five blue parasols.

Laurence Street

A row of planters will be installed at Laurence Street to create a fended off area between pedestrians and cars thereby creating a safer walking space for people.  Two steel powder coated picnic tables and two blue parasols in will be installed at a cost of €20,000.

Street furniture in West Street is a great addition –  such a pity though, that whoever enjoyed their lunch at this table didn’t think to put their rubbish in the empty bin beside them. Photo: Andy Spearman.

James Street

Outdoor Dining with Parasols at James Street and other locations with two picnic tables at each. The parasols with powder coated steel picnic tables cost €5,000 each.

Similar projects to be funded in other parts of County Louth include €118,000 for Carlingford and €190,000 for Dundalk.

€130,000 has also been allocated for cycle racks at beaches in the County.

Narrow West Street is to get a row of planters to keep pedestrians away from traffic, five steel picnic tables and parasols.
