Talks between Drogheda & District Chamber and Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, TD Simon Harris continued recently with a view to raising awareness and building strategies for local development.
The most recent discussion focused on initiatives to more effectively harness and develop the considerable talent pool within Drogheda and the local area, and in particular how greater educational resources for the region can be supported and complimented by increased opportunities for skilled people.
The potential for population growth in the North East region to counter historical outward migration trends was cited as one of many benefits greater educational and learning resources can produce for the local community.
The delegation, led by Chamber President Robert Murray, included representatives from Drogheda Institute of Further Education, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital and Dundalk Institute of Technology.
“We thank Minister Harris for his positive outlook in what was a meaningful and constructive discussion” Mr. Murray said after the meeting.
“We are acutely aware of the huge human resource potential that exists in our region and how tapping into it more effectively can play a major role in developing Drogheda as a regional centre of excellence for job creation, local infrastructural development and inward investment.
“We have some world-class learning facilities in the local area, however our objective is to see how our existing institutions can be both scaled up and added to, and ultimately giving as many of our local residents as possible the capabilities to create bright and exciting futures for themselves.”
The team at Drogheda & District Chamber plans to engage further with the necessary stakeholders over the coming weeks to help improve the educational landscape in the area.
