Independent Councillor Kevin Callan put out a call at this evening’s Borough of Drogheda meeting for the return of the Drogheda 800 stone, which stood for years in West Street to mark the 800th anniversary of the foundation of the city of Drogheda.
“In 1994 Drogheda celebrated 800 years, a tremendous and historic milestone” Councillor Callan said. “At the time we were honoured with a stamp by An Post and also with a commemorative stone which was placed at the heart of the town in West Street.
The stone was removed while works were carried out on West Street and it was revealed by Councillor Kevin Callan at this evening’s meeting that the stone is now languishing in the old corporation yard in Drogheda.
“We are looking at a new public space at the junction of William Street, Peter Street and Magdalene Street where the public will be able to sit down and enjoy the town centre area, this is the perfect place to locate this piece of our history. It is not right that the stone continues to lie in the yard.
After the meeting Councillor Callan said that he would be taking this up with the council’s management and the staff working on the project in Peter Street.
“What better place for the stone than outside the gates of St Peter’s a church of Ireland in a small community space?” he asked.
“A place where locals and tourists can see this lovely piece of our modern history that commemorated our beginnings as a town 800 years ago.”
