50% capacity means many trains sold out this weekend

Advance booking essential on Intercity and Enterprise services due to 50% capacity restrictions

Weekend line works affecting Heuston and Connolly routes

With on board capacity reduced to just 50% due to Covid restrictions, Iarnród Éireann is continuing to see very high demand for weekend Intercity and Enterprise services.

Many trains are already sold out for this weekend, 9th to 11th July, particularly on Dublin to Galway and Dublin to Belfast routes, with more trains expected to sell out on all routes across the network.

Iarnród Éireann reminds passengers intending to travel on Intercity and Enterprise services that advance booking is essential in order to manage the 50% of on-board capacity available for use under current public health measures.

“Customers must have a booking to travel, as tickets will not be available for sale at stations for Intercity and Enterprise services” a spokesperson said.

“This includes holders of existing tickets such as season tickets, and DSP free travel, who can reserve travel at no charge at www.irishrail.ie

Customers are also reminded that:

  • Face coverings are mandatory on board all train services and in stations
  • Alcohol is prohibited on all services, and catering services remain suspended
  • Customers with bicycles must also pre-book bicycle spaces on board Intercity services in advance

Weekend works

  • From 17:00hrs on Saturday 10thJuly to 09:00hrs on Sunday 11th July, line works between Hazelhatch and Portarlington will result in bus transfers on all Intercity services to/from Heuston, and revisions to Heuston Commuter services.
  • On Sunday 11thJuly for the entire day, line works between Connolly and Clontarf Road will mean:
    • DART services are suspended between Pearse and Clontarf Road Stations, with rail tickets valid on bus services
    • Northern Commuter: Bus transfers will operate between Connolly and Malahide
    • Enterprise: Bus transfers will operate between Connolly and Drogheda
    • Maynooth/M3 Parkway, Sligo and Rosslare services will operate normally, but Drumcondra and Tara Street Stations will be closed on this date.

The spokesperson also said “with more sectors of the economy open, and particularly with domestic tourism resumed, we expect many Intercity and Enterprise services to sell out in advance over the coming weeks, and particularly at weekends, with 50% of on board capacity available for use.

“That is why we are stressing to those who wish to travel that it is essential to book in advance, as otherwise you will not be able to travel.  Customers have been hugely cooperative and supportive throughout the past 16 months with all of the public health measures, and we are grateful for their further assistance with mandatory pre-booking.”
