The Louth Mavericks American football team will be hosting a charity fundraising match against a team of Italian all-star players in DkIT on Saturday September 25.
The Italian team is part of the Charity Bowl League, comprised of Italian all-star players from around the Italian American football leagues.
The match will be the showpiece of the Italian team’s trip to Ireland and at its conclusion the teams will announce a donation to the Simon Community.
For the Mavericks it is a very welcome return to action as they have not played a game in well over a year due to the covid pandemic.
Mavericks president Declan Mulvihill said: “It has been an incredibly tough eighteen months or so for the club, its players and coaches. Players and coaches are desperate to get back to games.
“To have the opportunity to play such a high level opponent and also give meaningfully to an organisation as worthy as the Simon Community is a great thing. We hope that we can put on a good show for anyone interested in coming to watch.”
The Mavericks have recently been hosting a series of introductory training sessions in St. Oliver’s CC in Drogheda and are due to return to training in DkIT, their usual haunt, on Sunday the 29th.
The clubs recruitment officer Ruairí Connolly said they are always taking new players into the club.
“Everybody is welcome” he said, “if you’re over 18 and have any interest in the sport at all then you should come down to a training session and meet the guys.”
The squad currently consists of players from age 18 to 37 and is open to both men and women. You can find them on all social media platforms or through their email: louthmavericks@gmail.com
