Independent Councillor Kevin Callan has hit out at Louth County Council for reneging on a commitment made to him in July that they would repair the roads at the Ballymakenny Road/ Crushrod Avenue junction before the schools return.
Callan told Drogheda Life that he had been raising the matter for four months, and a temporary fix had been carried out where he had sought a full repair.
“In July I asked for a commitment that the work would be completed before September and I was given this assurance” he said.
At the July Council meeting Councillor Callan said, “I cannot stress the importance of these works being undertaken and completed before the schools return, if we do not have these completed by September there will be serious impacts on traffic congestion”.
Callan said that throughout August he had sought an update on when the works would begin.
In recent days he was told that the works will be undertaken in September and the reason for this is that the contractor wants to complete works nearer to the schools first.
“I am highly critical of this as it was made clear to the council as far back as the start of July that this needed to happen in August, the Council agreed and said it would be done and somewhere along the way, someone made a decision which broke this commitment which was then not communicated to councillors or the public.
“This decision to leave the junction until September is ridiculous and fails to take into account any local knowledge of the area as the road is pinned in between schools on every side and is an essential route for parents and those looking to get to work.
“I will continue to challenge the council officials on this point, the road network requires serious work and to date we simply are not seeing action from the management of the roads section in and around Drogheda.
