Training pays off for Ciaran as he completes the Boyne Valley Camino

Most of us will be familiar with the sense of achievement that we feel when we complete something that has really pushed us to our limits. It’s a good feeling.

This sense of achievement was recently experienced by Ciaran Treanor on his completion of the 25kms Boyne Valley Camino. Ciaran is a resident with St. John of God and has been training for the Camino for the last few months.

Councillor Paddy Mc Quillan, who is a Care Assistant with St. John of God explains:

“During the last lockdown, like everything else in the country, the Day Care Services were closed but we were trying to make the days as active as possible under the circumstances.

“Ciaran likes to walk so we began walking together every day and gradually increased our distance. After a while Ciaran was walking as much as 8kms a day and he was really enjoying it.

“When the restrictions were lifted we told Ciaran about the Boyne Valley Camino and he said he would love to train for it. And so the big adventure began.”

The pair trained for the whole summer with the goal of completing the full 25km over two days. They trained three days a week and Ciaran took to it like a duck to water.

“Ciaran was delighted when his hard training paid off and he managed to finish the Camino” Paddy said.

“He was thrilled with himself when he received his certificate of completion from the Mayor of Drogheda, Councillor James Byrne.

“it was such a great achievement for Ciaran and the whole experience was made so much better when the Mayor greeted him at the end of the walk and presented him with his certificate.

“I would like to thank Mayor James Byrne for making this whole experience so much more special for Ciaran.
