Store room and staff canteen ordered to close for breaches of food safety legislation
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has ordered the closure of the store room and staff canteen at the Mr. Price store in Aston Village after inspectors found evidence of rodent activity.
The Mr. Price closure notice was one of four served on food businesses during the month of October for breaches of food safety legislation, pursuant to the FSAI Act, 1998 and the European Union (Official Controls in Relation to Food Legislation) Regulations, 2020.
The Enforcement Orders were issued by environmental health officers in the Health Service Executive (HSE).
The inspectors reported finding gnaw marks on a wall, rodent droppings in the staff canteen, behind the fridge and on packages of crisps, two of which had evidence of being gnawed by mice or rats.
FSAI Chief Executive, Dr Pamela Byrne, said “All food businesses have a legal obligation to ensure that they adhere to a high standard of food safety and hygiene at all times.
“It is also imperative that a proper pest control system is in place and that this is checked very regularly in order to avoid infestations of rodents and insects.
“It is also essential that food businesses have a strong food safety and hygiene culture in their business, which can be achieved through ongoing training of all members of their team and a strong commitment to food safety from the management team.
“Consumers have a right to safe food and food businesses have a legal requirement to ensure that the food they are processing, serving or selling is safe to eat.”
Details of the food businesses served with Enforcement Orders are published on the FSAI’s website.
Closure Orders and Improvement Orders will remain listed in the enforcement reports on the website for a period of three months from the date of when a premises is adjudged to have corrected its food safety issue, with Prohibition Orders being listed for a period of one month.
