Drogheda United launch Christmas Food Appeal

Following the success of their Christmas Food Appeal last year, Drogheda United FC have decided to help their community once again this year and are launching a food appeal over the build up to the festive period.

The club has listed Drogheda Cares for the Homeless, Drogheda Homeless Aid and their neighbours in Connect Resource Centre as the three beneficiaries of items collected in their two-week appeal.

Drog’s Chairman Conor Hoey has recognised the immense support the club received on this endeavour last Christmas and believes the club can help make a difference again this year.

“As a club we are acutely aware that people and families struggle this time of the year. The longstanding impact of Covid-19 has led to unprecedented battles with poverty and we recognise the charity partners we have teamed up are still under additional pressures to help our community through these tough times.

“We are a club with a strong community focus and I am always blown away by the support the club receives on our community endeavours, this project last year was no different.

“We want to help where we can and try ease some of these pressures again this year and I’ve no doubt our supporters will rally around with their donations again, A little goes a long way in appeals like this.”

Three local businesses have teamed up with the Drogs and are allowing their shops to be used as drop-off points for anybody who wants to donate Dry foods and non-perishable goods from Fri 3rd December – Fri 17th December. They are:

  • The Village Store, Aston Village
  • Centra Ballsgrove
  • Crazy Fruit, Southgate Shopping Centre

Community Liaison Officer for Drogheda United Joanna Byrne said that the willingness from these shops to allow the club leave a drop-off box on their premises is key to this appeal being a success.

“We are once again blown away by the backing these shops have given us. They like us, recognise the ongoing work our charity partners do to help the most vulnerable in our town and are only too happy to facilitate our appeal.

Without the support of these shops to use as drop-off points, this wouldn’t be possible. As people are shopping local over the coming weeks, we will have a drop-off box in each store and I’m appealing to the public to support our efforts, any donation small or large to this appeal will be greatly appreciated.

“Drogheda United prides itself on being a club embedded in our community and I’ve no doubt our supporters will get behind us on this and together we can play our part in helping our community this Christmas.”

Drop-off’s can also be dropped to Head In The Game Park Monday to Fridays between 9am and 1pm or alternatively contact Joanna on 085-2705083 to arrange a collection from you.
