Local athletics competitions are always an enjoyable event, and none more so than Blackrock AC’s annual Cross Country races.
With races from u7s upwards, there was certainly a chance for all young athletes to test their abilities over a variety of distances, with great support from the large group of spectators all out enjoying the day.
In the u7s race, Odette Gaynor and Adam Jhuboo gave it their all over the 100m distance, all smiles as they crossed the finish line.
The u9s had the longer distance of 500m to race over, and in the girls race, Caitlin Hughes finished in an impressive 14th overall. The boys u9 team took the silver team medal with super performances from Finbar Fagan, who finished 4th overall, followed closely by team mates Huey Judge, Liam Dowling and Charlie Cooper.
It was a full 1,000m to run for the u11s, and in a packed girls field, Isabelle Winters stormed to a 3rd place finish, with Laoise Black, Aoife Mccabe, running out of age, Veronica Jhuboo and Cara Fagan all running well over this tough distance.
In the boy’s race, Leighton Byrne sprinted down the home straight to a 5th place finish, with Will Gow, running out of age, and Spencer Gaynor also running well.
The girls u13 race was another strongly contested affair, with Bonnie Hegarty finishing in a fine 7th overall, with Robyn Reilly, Sadhbh O’Donoghue and Wannita McCabe not too far behind.

In the boys race Eoin McEntee ran a super race to finish 9th overall, with Cillian Everitt and Ronin Cowley also running a great race.
It was another well-earned medal for Allie Fennell in the u15 race, with 2,000m to run, she kept her composure to finish in a fine 4th place overall, with clubmate Paige Gaynor also running well over this challenging distance.
Altogether it was a great day’s competition, with more races to come this coming weekend.
