Repairs to Fair Street Council Offices to begin next week — 13 years after fire

Thirteen years after they were severely damaged by fire, the Chief Executive of Louth County Council has today confirmed that work to restore the Council offices in Fair Street is to begin next week.

In response to a question from Councillor Kevin Callan at this morning’s Council meeting in Dundalk, Chief Executive Joan Martin confirmed that contracts are to be signed this week and the contractor is expected on site next week.

Councillor Callan has frequently asked when the restoration and construction works would take place. Just two weeks ago he asked why parts of the complex were being covered in protective construction materials.

At this morning’s County Council meeting Callan asked when the work would begin and how long it would take.

Ms Martin confirmed that work is due to begin next week and will take 15 months. She also said that the work would begin on the red brick buildings first to avoid impacting public services such as housing and motor tax.

Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Callan said that the works were to be welcomed and will lead to improved public facilities on site in Drogheda.

“People in Drogheda will be served by new and appropriate facilities and access to public services and the works must be completed within the timeframe envisaged.

“This is something I will continue to query when the works are underway” he said, “my priority is the provision of public access to the facilities and the expansion of services in Drogheda.”
