Drogheda Olympian Colin Lowth becomes National Open Water Champion

Drogheda swimmer Colin Lowth is known best as a great butterfly swimmer, he broke many Irish Records in the 200m Butterfly an event in which he represented Ireland at  the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

Last weekend Colin was back in action when he took to the waters of Lough Lene in Collinstown, Co Westmeath for the National Open Water Championships.

The prestigious event attracted entries from all over the country as the top open water swimmers competed for titles at distances of 2.5km, 5km and 10km.

It also provided an opportunity for swimmers of all ages to achieve their own personal milestone in completing the demanding course.

The warm sunny weather and clear calm water meant that conditions were ideal for race day, with an enthusiastic crowd contributing to a wonderful atmosphere befitting of the occasion.

Lowth produced a dominant display in the 2.5km event which drew an entry of 70+ swimmers.

The Drogheda Olympian led from the front and powered away from his nearest rival to win by seven minutes in an impressive time of 29 minutes 30 seconds.

This was a first National Open Water title for Lowth, who is better known for his exploits in the pool.
