Hot on the heels of Sunday’s stormer of a gig from Led Zeppelin tribute band, the Rubber Plants, the Seagull Sessions shift up a gear this coming weekend at McHughs when top Northern R ‘n B outfit, the Bluez Katz, venture out for a rare gig south of the border.
One of Ireland’s premier blues bands, these Katz lay down blues in the way it should be, evangelising for the genre all over this island and beyond with a track record of playing all the best venues, major festivals and backing up some of the finest blues acts in the world.
The list of top performers the Bluez Katz have opened for is too long for one article, but some of the highlights include Van Morrison, Peter Green, Wilko Johnson, Paul Jones, Roben Ford and Big Jack Johnson.
The Katz have a sound that blends blues, jazz, rock and soul. They can find Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy Williamson, Jimi Hendrix and Herbie Hancock all in one groove.
The band is centred around charismatic frontman and harmonica player, Ian Sands, and includes his talented siblings James and Sarah, plus top rhythm section Laurence Dugan and David Breen. The Bluez Katz host other amazing musicians in their shows including very-highly respected guitarists, Sid McManus and Dermot McQuaid.
Recent appearances include Guinness Blues on the Bay in Warrenpoint, Derry Jazz Festival and the Seven Hills Blues Fest in Armagh.
Here’s a taste of what to expect:
With the change in the weather and season, the Seagull Sessions have now moved inside to the Barrel Venue but are still free to enter with no cover charge, run from 5pm to 8pm on Sunday and more gigs will be announced in the next week with a programme intended to continue until the October holiday weekend…
