Tough conditions at Louth Cross Country Championships

The second day of the Athletics Louth Cross Country Championships took place in Darver GAA centre on Sunday amid tough conditions that included cold, wind, rain, and a tough hilly route.

In the intermediate men’s race, Andrew White battled hard over the gruelling 8,000m distance, happy with his run as he gets back to form.

The u9 girls got the juvenile events underway, with a super run by Caitlyn Hughes to finish in an impressive 4th place over the 600m distance.

In the u11 boys’ race, Will Gow gave it his all, despite running out of age, finishing high up the field, as did team mate Marko Ozolins.

In the girls’ u11 race, the tough 1,500m distance did not deter young Isabelle Winters as she ran a tactical and well controlled race to come from 4th to 2nd place on the home straight, thanks to a lightning quick sprint finish, earning her a well-deserved silver medal, while club mate Veronica Jhuboo also ran well in a high calibre field.

The u13 girls had the longer 2,500m distance to cover, and both Bonnie Hegarty and Sadhbh O’Donoghue gave it their all despite the heavy downpour and strong winds.

As the weather continued to deteriorate, the u13 boys’ race was a tough battle for Eoin McEntee as he finished just outside the medals in 4th place, running out of age, while Ronanldo Ozolins gave it his all and continues to improve with every race.

The boys’ u15 race covered a 3,500m distance, and 6 young Boyne AC men showed that hard work and determination can reap rewards as they all ran superbly in the toughest of conditions.

Jack Garvey was unlucky to just miss out on an individual medal, but was delighted with his 3rd place team medal alongside clubmates Naoise McAvinia and Seamus Keenan, while Evan Gamble, Padraic Keenan and Nitin Arumagam all ran well too.

The final race of the day was the boys’ u17 who had 5,000m to race over, with Caoimhin McShane running a strong race to finish in the top 6, cheered on by his ever supportive family and coaches.
