Working as an Artist in the Regions and first Droichead Artist Drop-In

Many people have great artistic talent and would dearly love to make it their career. But is it a feasible proposition, especially if you live in total Ireland?

People in that position will certainly benefit from a new study “Working as an Artist in the Regions of the Republic of Ireland today” the results of which, the ARTCAREER, will be presented at Droichead Arts Centre on Saturday April 15 at 2:00 pm, by Drogheda woman Dr. Deirdre McQuillan of Technological University Dublin and Professor Elizabeth Keating of the University of Texas in Austin, Texas.

The ARTCAREER project is focused on exploring the experiences of working as an artist in the regions of Ireland today.

With the support of Droichead Arts Centre, McQuillan and Keating interviewed 40 artists in Drogheda and the surrounding region between 2021 and 2022.

From this study they developed the ARTCAREER Matrix to help artists think about and plan their careers. Workshops and focus groups were then held in Dungarvan, Tralee, Ballina, Mullingar, Swords and back to Drogheda in July 2022.

To finish the project the researchers have drafted their findings and feedback from the regions of Ireland into a policy report for The Arts Council of Ireland titled “Working as an artist in the regions of the Republic of Ireland today”.

Artist Drop-In

Directly ater the presentation, as part of Droichead’s ongoing strategy to enable artists to make and develop work of ambition and nurture art and artists in the region, there will be the first in a new series of quarterly gatherings where artists of all disciplines can, meet, chat, grab a coffee, talk about their work and get advice on everything from funding applications to elements of their practice.

Working as an artist in any genre can sometimes be an isolating experience and these gatherings are designed to support artists, nurture and grow a community.
