Ace AC’s Neil Culhane’s selection for the Irish team for the upcoming European under 20 Championships in Jerusalem in August was finally confirmed this this week.
Neil will compete in the 800m and, because he’s only 18 he will be eligible to run in the under 20’s next year providing he meets the qualifying times again.
Neil achieved 2 x 1.49 times in order to qualify. A time of under 1.50 for the 800m is a huge milestone in any middle distance athlete’s career, it’s no easy task by any means, proven by the fact that he’s the only u18 athlete in Ireland that achieved the time this year.
He was also part of the Irish u18 team last year at the European u18 championships.
Being out of age at a major championship, just to qualify for the final would be a huge achievement and this has to be Neil ‘s primary goal.
However, as the current u19 national, national schools and national junior champion, he will go into the event full of confidence and on the hunt for a European medal.
Neil will be training hard over the coming weeks with Ace AC before flying out with the Irish squad for the Championships.
