The National Transport Authority has confirmed to Deputy Fergus O’Dowd that a new fare strategy for Drogheda and East Meath is targeted for implementation in the first quarter of 2024.
“The new Dublin Commuter Zone aims to introduce a fairer policy for Drogheda and East Meath commuters by significantly reducing the variability in fares charged and anomalies on the northern line, this will essentially introduce a distance-based fare structure” O’Dowd said.
“The Chief Executive of the National Transport Authority, Anne Graham, also confirmed to me that the NTA intends to finalise and publish a fares determination in the coming weeks with a view of implementing the new fares in Q1 2024.
“This update also urges caution as the implementation will depend upon the ability of operators to introduce revised fares structures using existing ticketing equipment and back office systems.
“I have been campaigning for years now to bring about an end to the rip off commuters are currently experiencing on the northern line and I’m relieved to see we are not far away from the first major fare changes in decades.
“This new fare structure will be introduced ahead of the DART expansion to Drogheda which is on track to commence in 2025.”
