Communication boards to be installed in all playgrounds in Louth

Communication boards that enable non-verbal children to communicate with those around them are to be installed in all playgrounds in County Louth next year.

The move comes following a motion tabled by Independent Councillor Declan Power. The communication boards consist of symbols, pictures and photos that enable non-speaking or minimally speaking children to communicate with those around them.

The boards feature graphics representing feelings, actions, activities, and question symbols. By pointing to a specific image or symbol, those with speech and language difficulties can communicate with those around them and minimise frustrations or misunderstandings.

“These communication boards will aim to make our playgrounds more fun, enjoyable, and accessible and also help promote inclusion and interaction for all,” explained Cllr. Power.

“There was a positive response to the tabled motion by the Director of Services for place-making and physical development, Davy Jones, who said, “Louth Co. Council would endeavour to install Communication boards in all playgrounds in 2024.

“I welcome the response to this motion from the Council and the support from my fellow Councillors. I look forward to seeing these Communication boards installed in all our playgrounds in the County in the New Year and replicating similar rollouts with other local authorities across the country.” he concluded.
