My Streets brings Saint Brigid’s Day celebrations to local nursing homes

Saint Brigid’s Day celebrations have begun in Drogheda as My Streets Ireland introduces the ancient Biddy tradition from Mid Kerry to the town.

The Biddies, a masked group in white with elaborate straw hats, carry a Brídeóg to ward off evil spirits and bring music to rural and public places.

In Drogheda, the Biddies will visit nursing homes and community centres showcasing the ancient crafts of straw hat making and Brigid cross making.

The core of the Biddie tradition is the music and in Drogheda Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann , An Bóinn Wren Group , the Sacred Heart School Choir and Dixie Nugent will be performing at the venues

The Biddies have already graced the Community Centre, St Mary’s, and Moorehall and this afternoon they played at Tredagh Lodge. The events mark a cultural highlight, showcasing the rich heritage of the Biddy tradition while fostering a sense of community pride.

Michael O’Dowd, of My Streets, underscores the profound benefits of bringing music to senior citizens. “Music has a transformative power, especially for our senior citizens” he said.

“It not only entertains but also stimulates memories, evokes emotions, and promotes a sense of joy and connection.”

“My Streets expresses sincere gratitude to Louth County Council for their invaluable support in organizing these events, highlighting the collaborative effort to create vibrant and inclusive cultural celebrations as well as to Comhaltas Ceoilati

This ongoing celebration reinforces Drogheda’s commitment to being an interconnected, compassionate, and age-friendly community.

“The inclusion of senior citizens in these cultural events not only honours their contributions but also acknowledges the importance of preserving traditions that transcend generations.

“The town comes together, expressing gratitude for the cultural richness that these celebrations bring and the positive impact they have on the well-being of its senior citizens.”
