6 Things to Do in Termonfeckin

A trip to Termonfeckin is a curious mix of sightseeing and simply switching off. A monastery was founded here in the seventh century and the village is steeped in historical sites. At the same time the locals are friendly and easy going, so there are plenty of more relaxed things to do as well. Whatever brings you here, you will find something for yourself.

  1. Eat and drink in the village

Any trip takes a bit of effort to get here, so by the time you arrive you will probably be ready for something to eat. The village has options for a light breakfast, a strong coffee, or a proper sit down lunch. Starting here also gives you a chance to get your bearings before heading further out. There is also a lovely little shop selling fresh natural farm produce if you want to pick something up along the way.

  1. Visit Termonfeckin Castle

Once you are fed, the castle is the obvious first stop. Built in the fifteenth century, this three storey tower house served as the summer residence of the Archbishops of Armagh and it has held its shape remarkably well over the centuries. The setting is quietly striking and it gives you a real sense of just how long people have been putting down roots in this corner of Louth.

  1. Spend time at An Grianán

But Termonfeckin is not all about the past. A few minutes walk from the castle is An Grianán, an education and cultural centre. It is also a great option if you are planning to stay in Termonfeckin for the whole weekend or longer, as you can sign up for courses and spend your time learning crafts, cookery, music and much more. You will not need to worry about accommodation or food as both are included in the price of the courses.

  1. Walk to the beach

If you are looking for a quieter place to unwind, the beach is just what you need. This secluded sandy and slate beach is located between Termonfeckin and Baltray. You can enjoy the fresh sea air and take a look at one of the local landmarks, the shipwreck of the Irish Trader. It ran aground here in 1974 and has served as a reminder of the power of the sea ever since.

  1. Have a pint at the local pub

No visit to a village like this ends properly without stopping for a pint. The pub fills up with locals in the evening, the conversation is easy and it is often where you pick up the best tips for what to do next time you are passing through. A good way to finish the day.

  1. A game of golf at Seapoint

Expect stunning coastal scenery and challenging terrain throughout the championship course at Seapoint Golf Links. Blinds, burns and bunkers line the course along Termonfeckin Beach with the Cooley and Mourne mountains visible on the horizon.
