Young woman, two children injured in freak traffic accident in Scarlet Street

A peaceful sunny Good Friday evening at Scarlet Street on Drogheda’s north side turned into one of frantic activity in a matter of seconds yesterday evening.

The normally busy street was relatively quiet due to the bank holiday but it was quickly transformed into somethin approaching a disaster scene with one car on its roof and another on the opposite pavement pinning a baby’s buggy to the wall of a house.

The emergency services, Gardaí, Fire and ambulances were all at the scene, the junction of Scarlet Street and Francis Street, within minutes.

A video of the aftermath, which cannot be published for legal reasons, was soon doing the rounds on social media.

It shows two men being helped from the upturned vehicle by passers by and then one of them vaults over the bonnet of the other car on the pavement, presumably to assist the woman and the child in the buggy.

In a statement issued last night a Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are investigating a road traffic collision involving two cars and pedestrians that occurred in the Scarlet Street area of Drogheda on 02/04/2021 at approximately 6.30pm.

“Following a collision between the vehicles one of the cars then collided with three pedestrians, one woman aged in her 20s and two young children. The pedestrians attended hospital. No serious injuries are reported at this time.

“Investigations are continuing.”
