The Basement Sounds Music Programme at Boomerang Youth Service has announced that it is organising free “Taster” workshops running all next week for anyone between the ages of 12 and 18 with an interest in music.
Whether its guitar, songwriting or DJing you’re into or if you simply want to join in a Jam session, there is something there for you.
The Basement Sounds youth programme came about earlier this year when Boomerang was one of 55 young people’s organisations to benefit from the RTÉ Toy Show Appeal. With the €65,000 they were awarded, they brought in an experienced youth worker to deliver the programme.
Basement Sounds is aimed at young people between the ages of 12-18. The aim is to create a supportive and productive space to allow young people to engage with their own creative expression through music.
“Music is a powerful and transformative language that allows young people to express complex emotions and ideas. Music can also aid young people in developing a strengthened sense of self-awareness, self-confidence and resilience” said Boomerang coordinator Catrina Culligan.
Basement Sounds will cover a broad range of musical activities including Songwriting, Music Technology, Sound Design, Production Skills, Recording Techniques, Band Rotation and many more.
There is a full PA system and a fully equipped rehearsal space in the wonderful basement space at Boomerang Youth Café in Fair Street. These facilities are available to anyone with an interest in music.
“All music styles and interests are catered for and everyone is welcome to come and explore their own musical curiosity!” Catrina said.
“Basement Sounds will also put a particular focus on teaching the young people how to use and maintain all of the equipment. This will enable them to put on a range of their own events at Boomerang, including Battle of the Bands, Open Mics and Gigs!”
Taking the lead in this exciting initiative is Seán Mc Cluskey, a youth worker, musician and producer from Drogheda who graduated in Applied Music from DkIT specialising in community music, music technology and electro-acoustic composition.
With over 15 years’ experience in performing, recording and releasing music with projects in Ireland and Europe, Seán is excited to share this experience with young people at the Basement Sounds at Boomerang Youth Cafe!”
Sean Mc Cluskey is being supported on the project by Sean Thornton who is another musician from Drogheda with over six years’ experience in the live music scene having performed in bands and as a solo act.
Thornton is also a graduate from DkIT where he studied Applied Music with a focus on vocals.
