The highlight of every record collector’s year, Record Store Day, is happening on Saturday 12th June, and Golden Discs are running an exclusive competition to celebrate.
To win thirty minutes early access to their stores and €100 worth of vouchers all you have to do is keep an eye on their social media feeds and when they announce the competition, like the post, tag a friend and leave a comment with the location of your nearest Golden Discs store. Hint- There’s one in Scotch Hall.
Sales of vinyl records have increased tenfold in the past six years with about 309,000 vinyl records sold in Ireland last year which is a 42% increase on the 218,000 bought in 2019.
Golden Discs have been a leader in this vinyl resurgence in Ireland and they will of course be delighted to carry the Record Store Day vinyl releases including Therapy? Nurse (reissue on red vinyl), Roisin Murphy Crooked Machine, The Thrills So Much For The City (reissue on red vinyl), and U2 Fire (40th anniversary edition).
Perhaps one of the most anticipated releases is from Irish post-punk darlings Fontaines D.C., Live at Kilmainham Jail. With a setlist that encompassed both of their hit albums Dogrel and A Hero’s Death, this concert was originally broadcast as part of Other Voices ‘Courage’ series. The limited-edition release arrives on 180g heavyweight black LP in a gatefold jacket and includes an exclusive poster. The band’s many fans will no doubt ensure that this is one of the sell-out releases on Record Store Day.
The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008, and it was inaugurated to celebrate the culture of independently owned record stores around the world and the unique role these stores play in their communities.
From humble beginnings, today there are Record Store Day participating stores on every continent except Antarctica, and this year Noel Gallagher has been confirmed as the ambassador for Record Store Day 2021.
“Record shops were really important when I was growing up. It’s something that’s in my DNA. I think if we can keep record shops open for as long as possible, we owe it to the young people of this country.”
Gallagher will take on this role as well as releasing a limited edition colour vinyl of his latest High Flying Birds Album “Back The Way We Came: Vol 1 (2011-2021)” which celebrates the band’s 10th anniversary.
