Viking Festival returns to Slane with a full weekend of Family events

A unique and colourful festival is set to return to the banks of the River Boyne on May 16th and 17th, as the Boyne Valley Viking Experience takes over the grounds below Slane Castle.

Now in its fifth year, the event has grown into what organisers say is the largest medieval re enactment festival in Ireland, attracting more than 500 reenactors from across the country and Europe.

Visitors can expect a full day of activity, with a Viking camp village bringing history to life through live demonstrations, storytelling and hands on experiences. The camp will be open from 10.30am to 5pm on Saturday and until 4.30pm on Sunday.

Set against the backdrop of Slane Castle, the festival offers something for all ages. Families can explore how Viking communities lived over a thousand years ago, with craftspeople demonstrating traditional skills such as woodworking, leatherworking, pottery, weaving and jewellery making.

There will also be plenty of entertainment throughout the day, including music from medieval bands, birds of prey displays by Raven Haven Aviary and rune readings. Visitors can try their hand at archery, take part in treasure hunts and enjoy storytelling and Viking games for both children and adults.

One of the highlights of the weekend will be the large-scale battle displays, with more than 200 armoured warriors in full contact combat. There will also be a daily spectacle on the river at 1pm, as Viking long ships arrive carrying warriors to join their comrades on land.

The festival also features an authentic Viking market, where visitors can browse and purchase handcrafted goods from some of Europe’s most respected artisans.

Reenactors will be camped in a tented village below the castle, giving visitors the chance to meet them, hear their stories and learn more about Viking life in the Boyne Valley.

Family tickets include entry for two children and free parking, making it a good value day out. Visitors are also encouraged to dress up for the occasion if they wish.

For those planning to stay overnight, camping is available nearby at Slane Farm Hostel, while glamping options are available at Rock Farm Slane.
