Ukrainian refugees to arrive in Gormanston Camp this weekend

Assistance sought

News from Julianstown by Niamh Bn. Uí Loinsigh

Ukrainian refugees, primarily women and children, are due to arrive in Gormanston Army Camp this weekend.

A supply centre has been established in the camp and Julianstown and District Community Association are asking people to donate the following items:

Shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, sanitary products, shower gel, female deodorants, liquid soap, towels, underwear and socks for women and children.

Initial collections are Saturday 2nd and 9th April at and Julianstown Church Carpark from 3 pm to 3.30 pm. and Stamullen Church Carpark from 12 noon to 12.30 pm to prepare for additional arrivals, we have decided to create a centralised contact for people looking for assistance.

Initially we are looking for locals to just give their contact details so that they are kept informed of what is needed. It could be somebody looking for a bike to get to school or schoolbooks or uniforms.

It might be somebody offering to help with conversational English classes or somebody offering a job. The Irish people are known for their generosity and their Céad míle fáilte.

So far, the appeal has been amazing and there are lots more people out there who want to help – any little bit helps and is much appreciated. Please note that this is not a fundraising effort, and we are not looking to collect money.  For further information please contact Niamh Mitchell on mitchellniamh@gmail.com

Easter Gardens

It would be lovely to have some input from the children and younger families at Easter.  I am suggesting that families might like to make an Easter Garden – in a biscuit tin, or lid of a tin, or anything else that can contain it.  These can then be brought to church the day before Easter when we are doing cleaning and decorating and placed in the windows.  Some instructions are below, but you can google and see for yourselves what can be done! https://www.awilson.co.uk/making-an-easter-garden/ The Revd. Canon Katharine Poulton.

What can I plant in April for beginners?

April is also the month for planting potatoes, as well as onions sets, shallots and garlic, and Jerusalem artichokes. Many vegetables can be grown in pots, including carrots, salads and radish. Even if you have a dedicated veg patch, it’s still worth growing some extras in pots too, near the house for easy picking.

Julianstown & District Community Association have been working with the Meath County Council in relation to installing Heritage Signage for the village similar to that  in Laytown/Bettystown.  These new signs would feature an image of the Bridge over the R. Nanny and would look so much more enhancing.

St. Mary’s Catholic Church – Ukraine Collection

We would like to say massive thanks to all for the very generous donations for Ukraine last weekend.    A total of € 6,650 was raised.  This amount will be forwarded to Bishop Tom who will send it, in its entirety, to Bishop Iosef in the Diocese of Iasi.

If you wish to make a donation, please put it in an envelope, mark Ukraine Collection on the front and pop it into the Collection, or drop it in to the sacristy or parish office.
