The free trishaw service run by the Drogheda and District Service for Older People (DDS4OP) is starting up again next Tuesday, May the 9th.
One of the best things to happen in the Drogheda area in recent years has been the development of the greenway from Dominic’s Park to Oldbridge House.
It’s a lovely walk or cycle along the banks of the scenic River Boyne and plenty of people enjoy it. Sadly though, there are those who, because of advancing years or through disability, can’t take advantage of the facility.
That’s where the trishaw service comes in. They can bring people, who might not otherwise get out to enjoy the views, the fresh air and the peace and quiet, out to Oldbridge House and back.
The first Drogheda trishaw was one of three bought for use in County Louth – the other two are in Ardee and Dundalk – at a cost of €28,000. The money came from various sources including two years of Councillor Maeve Yore’s discretionary spend.
Drogheda Lions Club saw the fantastic benefits that elderly people and those with a disability were getting from the service and in 2020 they donated a second trishaw to the DDS4OP.
The service came to a halt for two years because of Covid but were back up and pedalling last year.
Starting from Tuesday next, May 9th, the two trishaws will go out every Tuesday and Thursday from Dominic’s park at 11.00 am and 12.30pm.
This year the service is running from May to September which is an increase from last year when it started in June.
Each Tri Shaw accommodates two people. They are powered by electric bikes which are guided by experienced and trained “pilots” who transport their passengers along the boardwalk out to Oldbridge House where they stop for a cup of coffee and are then cycled back to Dominic’s Park.
Booking is essential for this service.
