Tourist Office staff highlight prohibitive cost of B&Bs in the Drogheda area

Accommodation in Dublin approximately 30% cheaper than Drogheda

Staff at Drogheda Tourist Office in the Tholsel building have expressed their concerns about the cost of B&B accommodation in the Drogheda area. They say that accommodation in Dublin is approximately 30% cheaper.

Spokesperson Phil Conyngham gave the example of a British tourist who came into the tourist office looking for accommodation in the area for one night, he specifically asked for a private room with a budget of €70 – €100.

“He didn’t want to go to Dublin as he fancied to stay in Drogheda as he was intrigued by the town” Phil said.

“We contacted numerous B&B’s and hostels around the town and outskirts as he had a car and didn’t mind travelling further afield within reason. The cheapest price available on a Wednesday was coming in at €125 for a B&B and €115 for a hostel. The top rate for a B&B was €160 and most private rooms in a hostel where fully booked out.

“The man was gobsmacked with the prices for a country town and joked that it would be cheaper to get the ferry home tonight rather than stay in Drogheda!

“We looked up accommodation in Dublin and it was approximately 30% cheaper to stay there. The man thanked us for our help for trying to find accommodation locally, however he was very disappointed he couldn’t spend a night in our town.

“On the previous day, a woman from Cavan rang looking for accommodation for a few days as her mother was admitted to the Lourdes Hospital, and she wanted to be in close proximity to the hospital.

“The same prices came in as above and the woman never got back to us whether she found accommodation or not.

The bottom line is that the B&B’s & hostels are totally out pricing each other and making genuine tourists to look outside Drogheda for alternative accommodation. “Overall, as tourist advisors we feel despondent to quote prices that the B&Bs are asking for. Furthermore, the scarcity of accommodation in the Drogheda area adds to the problem.

“It is of great concern naturally to us at the tourist office, as we feel it’s affecting local businesses and tourism in the area.”
