The National Final of the Soroptimist Ireland Girls’ Public Speaking Competition was held in The D Hotel, Drogheda last Saturday hosted by the Drogheda Soroptimists.
The Edco sponsored event was co-ordinated by the Public Speaking Committee lead by local woman Mary Hession.
Seven regional finalists talked on a range of topics from the environment, friendship to the empowerment of women. During the competition each speaker was also given two minutes to prepare a two minute talk on the topic ‘STORM’.
The winner, Eve Donohoe from Loreto Secondary School Wexford, impressed the panel of judges with both her talk on Partnership and the Empowerment of Women, and her impromptu talk. This the first time for the Wexford Soroptimist Club to have a winner.
Soroptimist Ireland National President Miriam Murphy Woods and Drogheda Soroptimist President Margaret Geraghty along with the Mayor of Drogheda Councillor James Byrne congratulated all the finalists for their excellent talks.
The Soroptimist Ireland Girls’ Public Speaking Competition has been running for over 40 years and is the result of a North-South Soroptimist co-operation.
The Competition starts at school level, then at 15 local heats before moving to Regional Finals and ultimately, the National Final.
